Waiheke Island Is Worth More Than a Day Trip: My Recommended Places to Stay and How to Enjoy Your Time Here | No. 2

6 min read

Located just off the coast of Auckland in New Zealand’s North Island, Waiheke Island is well known as an easy day-trip destination, thanks to its convenient ferry connection from the city.

But as someone who actually lives on Waiheke Island, I truly believe that it would be a shame to experience the island in just one day.

There is a completely different side of Waiheke once the day-trippers have left and the island becomes quiet in the late afternoon.

The peaceful mornings by the sea.The slower pace of island life.Returning to your accommodation after spending the afternoon enjoying wine at a local winery.

These are the experiences that are difficult to enjoy on a day trip.

That’s why, whenever possible, I recommend staying on Waiheke Island for at least one night, and ideally two or more nights.

And if you are going to stay, I believe it is just as important to think about how you spend your time as it is to choose where you stay.

In this article, I’ll introduce two places I personally recommend, along with my suggestions for how to make the most of your time on Waiheke while staying at each one.

1. ViewPoint 📍Onetangi

A Romantic Coastal Escape for Couples and Honeymooners

The first place I’d love to introduce is ViewPoint, located in Onetangi.

I’m fortunate to know the owner personally, and ViewPoint is a place I genuinely love and recommend.

What makes this accommodation so special is its location, combined with the beautiful interior, thoughtfully designed with the owner’s artistic eye and personal touch.

From the balcony, you can enjoy views of Onetangi Beach, one of the largest and most beautiful beaches on Waiheke Island.

It’s a wonderful place to slow down, take in the ocean views, and enjoy some peaceful time together, making it an ideal choice for couples and honeymooners looking for a romantic island getaway.

ViewPoint features two bedrooms and can accommodate up to four guests.

I particularly recommend it for couples and honeymooners looking for a romantic and relaxing getaway.

There are wineries and restaurants nearby, as well as a small supermarket where you can pick up essentials and enjoy a quiet evening in the comfort of your accommodation.

Imagine spending the afternoon enjoying wine at a local winery, then returning to your accommodation to unwind and take in the beautiful ocean views.

ViewPoint is the perfect place to experience a slower pace of life on Waiheke, almost as if you were living here yourself.

Staying at ViewPoint? Pair Your Stay with My Private Tour

There are plenty of wineries around Onetangi, and having a car can be very convenient for exploring the area. However, if you want to enjoy wine tasting, you don’t need to drive yourself.

With my private tour, you can explore Waiheke’s wineries with your own dedicated vehicle and guide. I’ll tailor the day to the weather and your personal preferences, helping you discover the island at your own pace.

Perhaps you have a favourite style of wine, would love to visit scenic spots, or want to discover hidden gems known to locals rather than just the well-known tourist attractions.

A private tour allows us to be flexible and create an experience that suits you.

And once the tour ends, you can return straight to ViewPoint and enjoy a relaxing evening.

The combination of a day exploring the island, followed by an evening enjoying ocean views and a star-filled sky, makes this a wonderful choice for honeymooners and couples celebrating a special occasion.

2. Tangaroa Estate Onetoa

For Families and Friends Who Want to Enjoy Waiheke Together

Another place I’d love to recommend is Tangaroa Estate Oneroa.

Unlike ViewPoint, which I particularly recommend for couples and honeymooners, Tangaroa Estate is ideal for families and groups of friends travelling together.

The property includes a main house and a separate apartment, accommodating up to eight guests.

It is also relatively easy to access from the ferry terminal, with well-known wineries and walking trails nearby.

Whether you’re exploring the island as a family, visiting wineries with friends, or returning to your accommodation to enjoy a meal together, this property offers something different from a traditional hotel stay: the chance to experience Waiheke almost as if you were living here together.

It can also be a wonderful option for special gatherings, including wedding parties.

Why a Private Tour Makes Group Travel Easier

When travelling in a group of up to eight people, organising the day can be surprisingly challenging.

Where should everyone go? How will you get around? Which wineries need reservations? And where should you stop for lunch?

That’s why I recommend a fully private tour designed exclusively for your group.

Before your visit, I’ll ask about your group size, ages, wine preferences and dining wishes, then create an itinerary tailored to your needs.

Rather than visiting wineries alone, we can combine wine tasting with beautiful viewpoints, unique local spots and a relaxed lunch, giving you the chance to experience more of what makes Waiheke Island special.

If you want to make the most of your time together without packing too much into the day, a private tour is an excellent choice.

It allows everyone to enjoy the island together, at a comfortable pace, with the flexibility to make the day your own.

Enjoy More of Waiheke Island with an Overnight Stay and a Private Tour

I recommend staying overnight on Waiheke for more than just the comfort of having somewhere to stay. Staying a little longer gives you more time to experience the island itself.

With my private tours, I help you make the most of your time on Waiheke, introducing you to places and experiences you might not discover through guidebooks alone.

For example, you might want to:

  • Visit several wineries efficiently in one day

  • Enjoy beautiful scenery and nature as well as wine

  • Discover hidden gems known to locals

  • Choose a lunch spot based on your mood and preferences

  • Enjoy wine tasting without worrying about driving

  • Spend quality time together at your own pace on your honeymoon

  • Create a memorable day that everyone in your family or group of friends can enjoy

If any of these sound like your kind of holiday, combining an overnight stay with a private tour is an excellent way to experience Waiheke.

My Recommended Waiheke Itinerary

A Three-Day, Two-Night Stay

Day 1 | Arrival and Check-in

Take the ferry to Waiheke Island and settle into your accommodation. After checking in, explore the surrounding area, enjoy a relaxing walk along a nearby beach, or simply unwind.

In the evening, why not enjoy a glass of wine at your accommodation and ease into island life?

Day 2 | A Private Tour of Waiheke Island

Start the morning at a relaxed pace.

Depending on the weather and your preferences, we can combine winery visits, olive oil tasting, scenic viewpoints and lunch to create a full day of exploring Waiheke.

After enjoying the island’s wines, you can return to your accommodation without having to worry about driving.

Day 3 | Enjoy the Island's Morning Before Departure

Take a peaceful morning walk along the beach or enjoy a leisurely breakfast at your accommodation.

Alternatively, if you would like to explore a little more, I can take you to the island’s quieter eastern side, where you’ll find beautiful natural scenery and a more secluded side of Waiheke. Enjoy lunch along the way before I drop you off at the ferry terminal.

That final stretch of unhurried time, something that is difficult to fit into a day trip, is also part of the Waiheke experience.

Waiheke Is Not Just a Place to Visit. It’s a Place to Slow Down and Stay.

Waiheke Island is home to many wonderful wineries, but there is so much more to discover.

The ocean, the natural landscapes, the food, the wine and the relaxed pace of island life all contribute to what makes Waiheke so special.

Having lived here for nearly ten years, I’ve discovered many things about the island that you might not notice on a short visit.

That’s why, rather than trying to tick off every famous attraction, I want my guests to experience Waiheke in a way that suits them personally.

Where you stay is an important part of that experience, too.

You might choose to spend quiet, romantic moments overlooking the ocean at ViewPoint Onetangi, or enjoy time together with family and friends at Tangaroa Estate.

By combining your stay with one of my private tours, you can experience Waiheke in a way that feels uniquely yours.

Not sure where to stay, how many nights to book, or which day would be best for your tour?

That’s absolutely fine. I’d be delighted to help you plan your visit around your interests and travel style, drawing on my experience of living on Waiheke Island.

Rather than visiting for just one day, I invite you to stay a little longer and discover another side of Waiheke.

I have a feeling that by the time you leave, you’ll already be thinking about coming back.
