šŸ›³ļø How to get from Auckland to Waiheke

The most common way to get to Waiheke Island is by ferry. The departure point is the Auckland Downtown Ferry Terminal .

The ferry terminal is located at 99 Quay Street in downtown. The landmark for the ferry terminal is an old brown building in downtown.

Arrival is at Waiheke Island – Matiatia Ferry Terminal .

The journey takes approximately 35 to 45 minutes. This may vary slightly depending on the weather and whether the train makes a stop in Devonport or goes directly to the destination.

On lucky days, you might even spot dolphins and orcas from the ferry! 🐬🐬🐬

🚢 Differences between Fullers and Island Direct

There are two ferry companies that operate to Waiheke Island.

- Fullers360

  • It's a major company with frequent flights.

  • There are two ways to board:

    • Walk-Up (queue boarding): Even with a ticket, boarding is on a first-come, first-served basis. During peak seasons from December to March, you may have to wait for the next departure.

    • Adult $62

    • Reserve (Premium Seats) $99, includes sparkling wine on board.

  • The departure pier is near piers 11 and 12 .

šŸ‘‰ Advantages āœ” Frequent flights āœ” Optional reserved seats available

šŸ‘‰ Disadvantages: Walk-Up does not guarantee boarding (you may have to wait during peak hours), and it can take almost an hour if you go via Deponport.

šŸ“… Be careful from December to March ! Information on crowds and queues.

āœ” It gets especially crowded during Christmas, summer holidays, and New Zealand's public holiday season ( December to March ). Long lines can form, especially on weekends, public holidays, and for departures between 10-11 AM and 3-4 PM . During these times, it is recommended to get in line at least 30 minutes before your ferry departure time.

- Island Direct

This company was founded in 2023 by locals on Waiheke Island to serve local ferry users. It offers direct service from Auckland to Waiheke Island.

  • Fully reservable: You can choose your desired time in advance and secure your seat.

  • Example fares (Adult): Approximately $29.50 one way / around $59 round trip.

  • There are numerous flights throughout the day (from morning until late at night).

  • You can also purchase tickets on foot ( Walk-Up ), but it may be full during peak hours.

  • Boarding takes place near Pier 13 (inside the ferry terminal).

šŸ‘‰ Benefits āœ” Guaranteed seating āœ” Easy online booking āœ” Peace of mind even during peak hours

šŸ‘‰ Disadvantages āœ– Because it's a small boat, popular times fill up quickly, and if there aren't enough seats on weekdays, the tour may be cancelled.

āœ“ļø So what do we do?

ā¶ Arrive at the ferry terminal early. If using the Walk-Up service, arriving 30-40 minutes before departure is recommended. (During off-peak seasons, 10-15 minutes before departure is also acceptable.)

ā· Make the most of online booking → If you want to make sure you enjoy your time on the island, booking in advance with Island Direct is the best option.

āø Utilize Reserved Seats ( Fullers ) → If you want to board quickly and reliably, reserved seats are available for an additional fee.

šŸ’» How to make an online reservation (summary)

ā˜… Fullers ( Walk-Up / Reserve )

  1. Regular tickets (Walk-Up): Purchase at the terminal or on the official website.

2. Reserve: Book an available seat on the official website.

3. Arrive and queue 30 to 40 minutes before departure on the day of departure.

ā˜… Island Direct

  1. Open the website Island Direct NZ

  2. Select date and time

  3. Purchase tickets (receive QR code or ticket via email)

  4. On the day of arrival, we will arrive a little early and check in.

šŸ“ Summary (in order of recommendation)

šŸ“ Want to be sure to get on time? → Book Island Direct šŸ“ Even if it 's crowded. Flexible → Fullers Walk-Up šŸ“ Comfort and guaranteed seating, even if slightly more expensive → Fullers Reserve

The last Island Direct ferry from Waiheke Island departs at 10:30 PM, and ferries from Fullers run until 12:30 AM (the last one is at 11:00 PM on Sundays), so ferries are available until late at night.
